The Literature Essay Answer

Analyse texts and evaluate the aesthetic qualities and appeal of an author's literary style.

A literature essay is not a general essay about a book. It answers one question, using evidence from the text, in a shape that makes the argument easy to follow.

Builds onYr 8 · The Argumentative Essay

Method

Answer the question in your first sentence
No background about the author. No summary of the plot. Position first.
The writer made choices
Write the writer places this scene last so that…, not then this happens. Treating events as choices is the difference between retelling and analysing.
Short quotations, woven in
Three or four words inside your own sentence. Long block quotations eat your word count and prove little.
Never retell the plot
Assume the marker has read the text. Summary earns nothing at this level.

Worked example

e.g. To what extent is the central character responsible for what happens to her? (10)
  1. Underline the command words. To what extent means you must weigh, not simply agree. The question expects a measured answer, not a yes or no.
  2. State your position in one sentence. She is responsible for the decision but not for the conditions that made it necessary.
  3. Plan three paragraphs, each with a different angle — not three examples of the same point.Choice · circumstance · how the writer directs our sympathy.
  4. Paragraph one: point, short quotation, explanation of the writer's choice.P · Q · E
  5. Paragraph two: the strongest evidence against your position, handled honestly.Facing the counter-case is what to what extent rewards.
  6. Paragraph three: your strongest point, usually about technique rather than plot. How the writer positions the reader is the highest-value observation.
  7. Conclusion: restate your judgement in new words, with no new evidence.Say where you landed and why.

Practice

Retelling, quoting and command words.

1
An essay opens: This novel was written in 1962 and tells the story of a family who move to the city. What is wrong?
AnswerIt answers nothing. The first sentence should state the position. Publication dates and plot summaries earn no marks in a literature essay.
2
Rewrite as analysis: Then she leaves the house and does not come back.
AnswerThe writer gives her departure a single short sentence, refusing the reader the emotional scene they expect — which makes the loss feel administrative rather than dramatic.
3
Why is a half-page quotation usually a mistake?
AnswerIt uses words you need for analysis and rarely proves more than four well-chosen words would. Quote the smallest amount that carries your point.
4
What does to what extent require that do you agree does not?
AnswerA degree. You must say how far the statement holds and where it breaks down — a flat yes or no does not answer the question asked.
