Factorising — Common Factor & Grouping

Simplify algebraic expressions, expand binomial products and factorise monic quadratic expressions.

Always look for a common factor first, before anything else.

Worked example

e.g. 7x(2x−3y)−(3y−2x)7x(2x-3y) - (3y-2x)
  1. Identify the common factor in each term — recognise the contents of the brackets7x(2x−3y)−(3y−2x)7x(2x-3y) - (3y-2x)
  2. Change the sign in front of one bracket and switch the terms inside7x(2x−3y)+(2x−3y)7x(2x-3y) + (2x-3y)
  3. Write out as a product of the factors(2x−3y)(7x+1)(2x-3y)(7x+1)
